The key is that while audience needs to be uncomfortable and conflicted by the time THAT SCENE with Joel comes, they shouldn't be outright repulsed by the future-protagonist's actions. The suggestion that we won't get any part of her side of the story until after she kills Joel, though, would be a death sentence to this game's popular (if not critical) reception. The fact that Abby is only getting half a game to tell her story, that includes hunting down and at least beating the everloving shit out of Ellie, is worrying enough. They're trying to do something really difficult by making us sympathize with, and take on the role of, Joel's killer and Ellie's hunter. If the leaks are right about those, then there will be.issues. No spoilers, but if you played it then you know what I'm talking about)Ĭontext and order is the key here. IMO, it's a good thing when the mechanics make you align with what the character's feeling. Story-wise it felt very uncomfortable, mechanically seems to make one feel out of their element and wishing they had the strength and tools available to the main character, which I think perfectly drives emotional engagement further. I can't say how I feel about this one in particular because I never played TLOU myself just watched a friend play through it. Breath of the Wild makes a compelling case, to give a recent example. Some games can't pull it off because the mechanics don't support that kind of 'back to basics' situation. ![]() It's not always a positive, but I usually like that kind of shakeup if it's done in the right way. I personally love those moments in games where they change things up for a while and take away the items you've become accustomed to.
